In third grade, a water company came to our school. They spent two days explaining the need for saving water and concluded by giving us all efficient showerheads, promising that these would cut down water consumption by at least one-fourth. However, after that, learning about the environment just stopped. It seemed as if that small lesson was expected to have taught us everything there was to learn about sustainability and environmental health. News flash: it was not.

When I moved to the Middle East, I found that my new school also did not greatly touch on environmental topics. Sure, we went on beach cleanup field trips, but we weren’t taught the importance of caring for our environment. This lack of education seemed to be a recurring trend. Upon returning to Houston, I noticed the urban pollution and impending climate crises that weren’t being directly discussed in classrooms. 

Seeing this gap in environmental education and the critical need for increased awareness, I realized the importance of a more comprehensive approach. This led me to create Sprouts—a platform dedicated to filling this educational void. By offering a well-rounded curriculum, actionable advice, and insightful research, Sprouts seeks to address the shortcomings in environmental education and inspire a new generation of environmentally conscious citizens.
